Creative Catalyst IV: Artists that Teach

WHO: Artist-educators from Gavilan College and local schools, including Britton Middle School, Central High School, Live Oak High School, Palma High School in Salinas, and San Benito High School.

WHAT: Created the artwork displayed in the exhibition Creative Catalyst IV. The exhibition is a gathering of work created by artists who share a common experience: they also teach.

WHEN: November 22, 2004 through January 14, 2005. Opening reception December 3 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.. The regular gallery hours are Mondays -Thursdays from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m., Fridays from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

WHERE: Gavilan College Art Gallery, in the Library Building, main campus: 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy, CA

WHY: Traditionally the essence of art - creativity - has been passed on from generation to generation via art guilds, master/apprentice workshops, Royal Academies, oral traditions, and -most recently- the educational system. Throughout time the teacher has attempted to inspire and motivate their students to begin on their own creative journeys.

Artist-educators serve functions that at times span different worlds and dual roles. Artists who teach have the challenge of creating to fulfill their own needs while sharing that inspiration and journey with their students. They must maintain the balance between their creative and teaching lives.

Said curator Sonia Rorebaugh: "We as artists extend our invitation for you to experience our show. As artists we bridge the past to the future, teaching our students to follow their own creative paths."
