"High on Health" - Annual fair brings

WHO: Gavilan College Student Health Services and the Associated Student Body present:

WHAT: "High on Health 2004" This annual health fair, now in it's 11th year, features free health services and health education for the community. Student-driven, the annual health fair has provided a learning environment for over 13,000 students and nearly 783 community agency staff aver the past 10 years. Last year over 1500 people attended and gathered information from 51 agencies.

Agencies attending will provide information on a wide range of health-related issues, from fitness and nutrition, to substance abuse and smoking, to mental health. Services will include free and confidential HIV testing, free blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, and counseling referrals for individuals and families.

In 2003, over 200 individuals had their blood glucose tested -- a screening tool for early detection of diabetes. 10% needed immediate follow-up care. Of the 200 people who had their blood pressure taken, 8% needed immediate follow-up care. In addition, 158 people requested information about the National Bone Marrow Registry, and three of them were successfully matched.

The community is invited to attend this free event for a chance to speak with experts on a number of topics, and find out about opportunities for internships and employment in the health field. Those who attend can participate in a prize drawing, enjoy massage demonstrations, and learn about the many community resources available to them.
