Legal consequences of teen pregnancy explored in innovative play

Who: San Benito County Commisioner Jean Flanagan

What: Has written a play that will be performed as part of the Gavilan College"First Monday Series"
The play, ?San Benito County vs. John Doe" was written by San Benito County Commissioner Jean Flanigan as part of an educational program for teens to inform them about the California child support system, the court system, and the rights and liabilities of parents who don?t live together.

San Benito County v. John Doe tells the story a teenage couple who, on a first date at the local junior prom in May, practice unsafe, unplanned sex and find themselves, nine months later, the unintended parents of a new baby girl. The dialog takes them through the emotional, physical, and financial life changes that come with being unwed parents living apart and needing to support a child. The play also deals with the legal and financial consequences for both the girl and boy as they realize how costly a child is when they appear in court in the last scene.

When: October 4, 2004 at 6:30 p.m.

Where: Gavilan College Theatre
5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy, CA 95020

Cost: FREE!!!

WHY: Commisioner Flanagan is hoping that more people will see this play, which has been used in classrooms in San Benito County. She would like to make it available for schools, youth programs, and other appropriate venues. This play is recommended for students, parents, grandparents, lawyers, teachers?absolutely anyone with an interest in helping the youth in their community.

The First Monday Series is a playreading series that has been created to introduce the South Valley Communities to diverse theatrical experiences through the reading and discussion of challenging and socially relevant contemporary materials, presented by professional actors, Gavilan college students, and members of the community.

The series takes place on the first Monday of each month (except on holidays).
We invite the submission of new works for consideration to be a part of this series.
We would also like to encourage playreading suggestions from the community.
