Kudos to Jeff Gopp and the Facilities and Maintenance Team! On Tuesday, March 19 a Point of Dispensation (POD) Exercise was held in the Student Center and the North South Lounge. The exercise evaluated the City of Gilroy and Gavilan College’s capability, with our existing supplies, instructions, and maps, to set up a single POD to be used to distribute prophylactic medication or administer vaccinations to the local population in the event of a: bacterial disease outbreak, bio-hazard terrorist attack, or pandemic (e.g., flu) outbreak. This exercise involved notification and activation of those involved with set-up and the actual set up of a POD. The actual exercise and set-up was complete in 1 hour and thirty minutes. The POD involved Gilroy Fire Department, Gavilan College Staff, ASB Personnel, Santa Clara County Public Health Department (SCC/PHD), Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers, and the Santa Clara County Sheriff Office. Altogether, over thirty people participated in the successful drill.

The set-up included having the perimeter of the Student Center/Administration Buildings aligned with directional bollards placed around to guide any potential recipients of prophylactic medication. The only area completely occupied by the team was the Student Center. Everyone worked together as a team and set a high standard for future drills such as the one that took place in Morgan Hill on the following day. This is critical and could involve all of the population of Gilroy if an actual emergency like this occurred. Let’s hope we never have to use it.

Many thanks to everyone that helped on this exercise including the students who evacuated the cafeteria during their lunchtime. If you were a part of this drill, then you were a part of history.

At their March meeting, the Board of Trustees renamed the gymnasium the Bud and Jean Ottmar Memorial Gymnasium, in honor of the many years of service to the college of both Bud and Jean Ottmar. The Signage Subcommittee is working with the Department of Athletics and Kinesiology to implement the name change.

Students can get help with research skills, documenting sources, writing an essay exam, and revising or proofreading their essays at our workshops in the Writing Center(Li120, near the Tutoring Center).
