From the President

On Staff Development Day I updated you on some of the items that are going to impact the college. As the budget continues to gain media attention I want to reiterate my key points:

State’s Fiscal Crisis

Dependent on state funding like all community colleges, Gavilan is going to be affected by the state’s decisions on how to narrow the $14 billion gap between revenues and expenditures.  Historically, the state makes a mid year reduction when it realizes it does not have enough money to pay the amount allocated at the beginning of the year. These dreaded mid year reductions are the worst possible type of adjustment. The adjustments are announced well after the annual spending plan has been established. For the most part the money has been spent or is committed for at least one full year of payments.

Building Names Survey!

Buildings on the Gilroy campus will be undergoing significant changes over the coming years. Some will be changing uses.

The current building naming plan designates buildings by historical function, whereas some colleges use naming systems that aid in navigation (such as numerical or alphabetical.)

Should a new designation scheme for campus buildings should be developed to incorporate all of the changes systematically, or should each building name be considered at the time the building is renovated?

Your opinion on this short survey will help to guide the Health, Safety, Facilities, and Grounds committee in developing a recommendation.

Welcome new employees

Denise Apuzzo has joined the Public Information Office as a Departmental Assistant. She will be coordinating the Alumni Database and helping to build an alumni organization. Denise also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Gilroy Unified School District.

Ericson Estamo is the newest member of the MIS department, where he is now the Computer Hardware/Software Tech to our campus.
Ericson has a B.S. in computer engineering from AMA Computer College in the Philippines. He worked in the Philippines for several years prior to moving to the U.S. He worked as a Computer Technician for the Pajaro Valley Unified School District and then as a Help Desk Support for the GDR Group in Irvine, California.

Shawn Mulcare is now our part-time Multi Media Technician for TV/Film. Shawn received his AA degree from Gavilan and is attending CSUMB working on a Teledramatic Arts major.
