Course Descriptions

Art of Storytelling for Older Adults

Bridge the generational gap and learn the ancient time-honored way of sharing cultural values and passing down history from one generation to the next. Storytelling is a valuable way to increase intergenerational understanding and unity and creates an opportunity for children and adults in the community to have their lives enriched by this creative activity. The class will provide training tips and the opportunity for older adults to volunteer their new skills in a community setting.

Arts & Crafts I

Discover your creative side with this basic arts and crafts class.  Explore various methods and materials including:  painting, drawing, color theory, composition/rendering, batik/tie-dye, quilting/needlepoint, crotcheting/knitting and block printing.

Coping With Loss

Are you anticipating or coping with a loss in your life and need some guidance through the journey we call grief?   Learn how grief and loss are an integral part of the human experience and that you are not alone.  Develop effective coping skills, identify signs of depression, utilize available community resources and find meaning, growth and healing along the way.

Discover Your Family History for Older Adults

Have you always wanted to build your family tree?  Learn how to research and organize your family history and create a special memento for your family to share.  Various sources for researching including Internet use will be encouraged. 

Film Classics for Older Adults

Love movies?  Then this class was made just for you!  Study the fact, fantasy, history and trivia of classic and modern films.  Take a historical look at the growth and development of cinema including significant films that contributed to its establishment as an art form.

Finding Book Treasures in Literature for Older Adults

Have you always wanted to join a book club?  If you answered yes then this course is for you.  Explore various works including fiction, drama, poetry, essay, and biography.   Then discuss theme development, narrative techniques, social context and what makes good writing. 

Internet Literacy for Older Adults

Have a computer, but not sure what to do with it?  Would you like to learn how to email your friends and family, keep up on current affairs, shop and meet new people?  No previous computer training is required for this class…just bring an open mind and let us do the rest!

Journal Writing for Older Adults

Journal writing is the latest craze!  Learn how to express your thoughts, emotions and experiences in an organized fashion and create a beautiful memoir along the way. 

Music Encounters for Older Adults

Enjoy your favorite music from various eras, new and old, by listening, singing, playing and creating music in a group setting.  Even the most inexperienced can bring something new to the table.  Come share your talents and be inspired by others.       

Music, Movement and Wellness for Older Adults

Exercise with friends and music!  Improve overall health through movement, music and relaxation techniques.  A fun and relaxing way to stay in shape while increasing body strength and flexibility.

Tai Chi for Older Adults

Often viewed as steel wrapped in cotton, Tai Chi is not only beautiful to watch, but is growing in popularity due to its low impact and effective results.  The art of Tai Chi includes a series of slow paced movements and postures that improve balance, flexibility, coordination, breathing, and builds strength and stamina.  Tai Chi practice will bring your mind, body, and spirit together to relieve stress and enjoy the present moment. 

Writing Your Autobiography for Older Adults

Take a stroll down memory lane, put pen to paper and create a personal treasure for generations to come.  Learn how to document your experiences and learn narrative structure, style, vocabulary, and interpretation.
