Gavilan College Theater presents Cabaretby on Apr 27, 2017
Who: This Theatre Arts production is starring Brian Carmack as the Emcee, and Katya Blandino as Sally Bowles. As a long-time veteran of the musical theatre stage, Brian Carmack has performed in numerous productions spanning more than 25 years. He has enjoyed performing in the U.S., across Europe and several other continents. Katya Blandino is a professionally trained opera singer who is making her debut as a lead in this musical production. This production is directed by Dr. John Lawton Haehl, with Vocal Direction by Sandra Marlowe, Musical Direction by Dana K. Parker, Set and Lights by Izzy Quistian, Costumes by JLH and Roxanne Femling.
What: Set against the lush backdrop of the decadent last years of the Weimar Republic, Cabaret follows the lives of several characters (Sally Bowles, Cliff Bradshaw, Frauline Schneider) through the social upheaval that led to the Third Reich’s rise to power in Germany. Kander and Ebb’s lush score is inspired by music from the 1930's, and features such classics as “Maybe This Time”, “Willkommen”, and of course, “Cabaret”.
"Musical Theatre has the ability to inspire us, transport us to other times and places and to find insights into our own lives. Cabaret has been performed almost continuously around the world since it was first introduced in the 1960's. The many revivals and incarnations it has gone through are testimonyto the compelling characters and wonderful songs (Cabaret, Maybe This Time, Mein Herr) that Kander and Ebb have created. As Director of the Theatre Arts Program, I have two main criteria for choosing our plays for production: 1) it must have compelling characters and stories that grip or move you, and 2) it must have great performance opportunities for my student actors and majors,” said John Lawton Haehl.
