Using the Gavilan Library Catalog to Access Real Books and Virtual Books

From the Library Homepage select the Gavilan Catalog icon. You will be taken directly to the Basic Search screen. This screen is set up for several options on your search. If you know a particular book that you want, search on title. If you know a particular author you want, highlight Author on the list of options, and type in the last name, then the first.

For a topic like immigration or abortion or alternative medicine, you can search either by keyword or by subject:

These two options will give you very different result screens.

A search for "alternative medicine" as a keyword will give you 866 different titles of books (as of July 15, 2006). On this result list, the titles (like Kombucha: tea mushroom: the essential guide) are linked. If you click, you'll be taken to the individual record for the book. But just from this page, you can tell where the book is located (on the mezzanine, boxed in red), what the exact location on the shelf is (the call number, RM666 .T25 H63 1995, circled in red), and whether or not the book is checked out (the status, underlined in red).

A search for "alternative medicine" as a subject heading will bring back a list of Library of Congress subject headings, with the number of books that Gavilan Library has for each heading:

list of alternative medicine subject headings

If you click on the first heading, ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE, you'll be given a list of 6 titles, along with their location, call number, and status.

EBOOKS

Some books on your list may have a location of Electronic Book.

Gavilan Library has over 10,000 titles available as Ebooks. These are on hundreds of subjects and are available anytime and anywhere you can get on the Internet. You will know that you are looking at an e-title if you see a Library Location of Electronic Book and/or a link in the title record that says Click to access this electronic book via the World Wide Web.

This will take you to NetLibrary which provides our ebooks. If you are on campus you will be taken to the record. To read the book, click on View this ebook. This takes you to the full text of the book. You can read the book page by page or you can go directly to the part of the book you need by using the Table of Contents.

If you are not on campus you will be prompted to log in.

If you have not created an ebook account already, you can do so now. Click Here and login with your library card

Now you can create an account in the ebooks system. From the NetLibrary screen, click on Create a Free Account located in the upper right corner of the screen.

Answer the eight questions and click the Create Account button.
