COUNSELING

Gavilan College provides a wide range of counseling services through its professional staff of seven counselors. Counselors are members of the faculty (teachers/instructors) who provide information, direction and support for academic/educational career and personal concerns. Over half of the staff are Spanish-speaking, and you may choose to work with either a woman or man.

Many of the counselors also have special areas of expertise. These areas include the following: Associated Student Body Advisor/student government; disability issues; EOPS; foreign students; marriage, family and child counseling; Puente; Re-Entry; Transfer Agreements with four-year colleges; and veterans’ issues.

Each counselor has an individual style. Select someone with whom you feel comfortable and stay with that counselor throughout your time at Gavilan. You can "shop around" until you find a good match for your needs. The counseling department secretary (408-848-4723) can assist you.

The counseling offices are located in the same building as the Admissions and Records Office and the Information Desk. You can see a counselor of your choice by either scheduling an appointment in the binders near the counseling offices or dropping in during drop-in hours, which are spread over morning, afternoon and evenings (except Friday evenings and weekends).

Depending upon the time of the year and the other commitments on the counselors’ schedules, you may be seen the same day or you may need to plan ahead and schedule an appointment. Developing educational plans and discussing other lengthier matters should occur before the registration rush when others are trying to sign up for classes.
