Dr.TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy PTSA
Membership and involvement in the PTSA of the Dr. T.J. Owens Gilroy Early College Academy is a fundamental component of our school structure. The primary mission of the PTSA is to provide financial and logistical support for school events, projects, and classroom learning, and both the President and Treasurer of the PTSA will automatically be seated as members of our Site Council.
An active and involved PTSA is so crucial to the success of the Academy that, on our application, we ask each incoming parent to commit to (a) becoming a member of the PTSA and (b) working a minimum of four (4) volunteer hours per parent each semester.
We strongly encourage you to become an active member of the Gilroy Early College Academy PTSA. Committe Heads will be elected at our Back to School Night on August 19, 2008, and we will hold our first PTSA meeting on that evening. Annual membership is only $25 per family (Student and Parents), and all dues and donations will be diligently used to support and enrich the GECA experience for our students.
Please make your check payable to: “PTSA – Gilroy Early College Academy”, and either mail or hand deliver it, along with the Application for PTSA Membership, to the GECA main office at Gavilan (PB-17).
We thank each of you for both your commitment to your student’s success and your support of the Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy at Gavilan College.
Please contact either Wendy Singh or Maryellen Bassenesse (2008-2009 Co-Presidents) for additional information.

On Campus Policy
Freshmen and/or Sophomore students must be on campus from 7:50 AM through 3:50 PM, whenever school is in session. In addition, Freshmen and/or Sophomore students may NOT leave the Gavilan campus at any time during the school day without both parental permission and notification to the GECA administrative staff. Leaving the campus without documented parental permission and GECA administrative staff notification will constitute an automatic Level II Honor Code Violation, with appropriate disciplinary action as determined by the GECA Tribunal and confirmed by the Principal.
Like Freshmen and Sophomores, Junior and Seniors are expected to be in timely attendance for all college and high school classes. However, as upper classmen, they are not required to remain on campus throughout the school day and may leave during time periods they are not in either a college or high school class. This is a privilege that requires written parental consent and may be revoked or modified by either the GECA Tribunal or at the sole discretion of the GECA Principal.
Campus Emergency Procedures
STAY CALM!
You cannot help anyone if you allow yourself to panic. Remember, there are people and procedures in place designed to help you in all situations, remain calm and use them!
GET HELP
This may mean calling for outside law enforcement or medical by dialing "911" directly, or calling campus security by dialing "10" or 408-710-7490. It may even mean that you decide that you are needed to assist a victim while directing someone else to call for help. Determine the best course of action for the situation and take charge. Remember, people are looking for someone to take the lead, so feel free to point at someone and say, "call 911!"
STAY ON THE LINE!
If you are the person calling for help, stay calm, and speak slowly and clearly. Give your location and the nature of the emergency. Remember to STAY ON THE LINE UNTIL TOLD TO HANG UP. Emergency Services may need to update information and ask you questions regarding details or victim information and they will let you know when they have all the information that they need.
If you dial "10"
If you dial "10" from anywhere on our Gilroy campus, realize that there is a 2-3 second delay while it switches to the cell phone. This doesn't sound like a long time, but it will seem a lot longer when you are in the middle of an emergency. Again, don't hang up, stay on the line. If you get voice mail, it means the officer may be on the other line, don't hang up, leave a message with your location and the nature of the emergency and how you can be contacted. You may have valuable information that no one else has!
