Accelerated Math and English
Accelerated math and English courses offer students a way to complete their math and English prerequisites efficiently. Students spend each semester focusing on one subject and building a strong foundation in the basics. Since each subject is taught in an immersion format (6-10 units), it is recommended that students enroll in accelerated math or accelerated English courses in two different semesters and should have enough time in their schedules to devote approximately 15-25 hours a week to their studies outside of class.
Who can enroll?
Students who have completed Gavilan’s placement assessment and are eligible to enroll in English 250P Practical Writing and English 260P Preparation for College Reading (6 units) or Math 411 Integrated Pre-Algebra (6 units) or Math 235 Integrated Algebra (10 units).
How will I benefit?
• Complete your English and math prerequisites more quickly.
• Receive a high level of support from teachers, counselors, tutors, and peers.
• Work with a counselor to plan your studies.
How can I prepare? Students planning to take Math 411 or 235 are highly encouraged to take a one-week immersion course, Math 413 or Math 414, to review math concepts and get a stronger foundation for the accelerated course.
