Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of the month from 2:30pm to 4:00pm and are scheduled in North/South Lounge.
Welcome to the Fall 2018 semester!
I hope you all had a wonderful summer vacation. I know many of you spent part of that summer teaching courses, doing professional development and participating in other work for the college and our students, but I hope you had an opportunity to rest and have returned as excited as our students are for the fall semester.
We are going through many changes at Gavilan and in Community College Education, from how we can better serve our students to how we are funded in that process. The Vision for Success from the Chancellors office has given goals to California Community Colleges including but not limited to increasing transfer, degree, certificate achievement, job skills and the percent of exiting CE students employed in their field of study, reducing equity gaps and cutting achievement gaps over the course of the next five to 10 years. Guided pathways is one way we can make an impact on these goals. Looking at data to help us make informed decisions will continue to be a focus for us moving forward. Many have been hard at work putting guided pathways into motion, as mentioned before, we have some of the most dedicated faculty and staff! Our students are fortunate to have the opportunity to work with all of you. We each bring something different to the table and we can learn from not only each other but our students as well. Putting them at the forefront of what we do should be one of our goals.
Many have asked the question, “What is your why?” Mine, is that I think I can make a difference. Help me continue to foster communication, encourage participation in our shared governance process and encourage others to take on leadership roles. There are so many ways to be involved in creating change and helping our students be successful!
As a Senate it is our responsibility to make recommendations with respect to academic and professional matters. Please see the 10+1 below. We have policy in place and we have a shared governance process. We need to keep one another accountable for current policy or for making recommendations when change in needed. Thank you for your continued dedication to our students and College and I look forward to this year!
According to TITLE 5: §53200, Academic Senate means an organization whose primary function is to make recommendations with respect to academic and professional matters. “Academic and Professional matters” means the following policy development matters:
- Curriculum, including establishing prerequisites.
- Degree and certificate requirements.
- Grading policies.
- Educational program development.
- Standards or policies regarding student preparation and success.
- College governance structures, as related to faculty roles.
- Faculty roles and involvement in accreditation processes.
- Policies for faculty professional development activities.
- Processes for program review.
- Processes for institutional planning and budget development.
- Other academic and professional matters as mutually agreed upon.
The items listed above are referred to as the 10+1. When items are brought to the Senate, we need to consider how they fall under the 10+1. If they do not, are they a Senate issue? I invite you to join me. Attend a meeting, create dialogue between you and your department Senate Representative, discuss with your colleagues all matters Gavilan and learn how you can be a part of the leadership on campus.
Have a wonderful semester and I look forward to seeing you!
