COMMUNITY SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS
Under the direction of Denise Besson-Silvia, special recognition has been gained from the community for the small group projects completed in Mrs. Besson-Silvia's Small Group Communication course. As a result of her success, all the

Operation Desert Donation
Outstanding Service Learning Group 2009
MEMBERS: Lucas Black, Charlene Rich, Brian Holbert, Jordan Lance and Dylan Whitmer
Operation Desert Donation worked in conjunction with Operation Interdependence located in Gilroy for six weeks during the Spring semester 2009. Initially the group had set a goal of volunteering 12 hours per person (a total of 60 hours) compiling care packages, writing letters to the troops and fundraising $300 to purchase calling cards and much needed supplies. They surpassed all goals, volunteering over 20 hours per person (over 100 hours total) and fundraising over $808.
At Gav Fest, Operation Desert Donation set up a fundraising and information table. Suzi Kugler, the site manager from Operation Interdependence and mother of a troop currently stationed in Afghanistan came to Gavilan solely to visit the group. She not only complimented their unwavering commitment to the volunteer work, she stated that they brought new life to Operation Interdependence. She went on to say that most volunteers were over the age of 50 and when this group would enter the room, the existing volunteers were energized and reminded that patriotism is not lost, its alive and evident in Gilroy, CA.
Congratulations to all the members of Operation Desert Donation for winning one of the Service Learning Scholarships. They were recognized for the volunteerism at the Scholarship Ceremony, May 14th. Well done!
