CGD8 Advanced Computer Graphics for Design Application I
4-units-2hrs lec a wk, 6hrs lab a wk by arrangement.

Course Description: Application of computer graphics to specific technical design and graphic communication projects tailored to the student's major study area. An open entry/exit supervised class. The student is allowed an individual or a cooperative learning environment on selected projects. Students may concurrently enroll in CGD110. Note: This class is designed for the study and application of specialized graphic processes that may not be offered in the other CGD classes.

Course Prerequisites: Eligible for English 250, English 430A, and Mathematics 233.

Required Texts: The student selects the proper text and or reference material according to the software he/she uses. This may include several texts (manuals).

Required Course Materials: 3.5" Disks, Zip 100 mb, 8.5" X 11" Sketch Pad Class.

Units: Freehand and computer graphics concept and ideation drawing. Special Applications relates to field of study, depends on the software(s) being used. Technique development, personal style of designing, and drawing. Experimental geometric design using various graphic software shapes and intersections of shapes. Use of the net/Internet in transferring data, graphics, and documents.

Class Objectives: At the conclusion of this course the student will,
  • Be able to apply advanced problem solving to his/her selected project.
  • Start developing a style of graphic working with various techniques.
  • Be able to perform and manipulate file exchange and down loading.
  • Be able to do digital manipulation of various graphic file formats.
  • Be able to perform graphics as per student selected software.

Class work and schedule of content: Student work is turned into the instructor upon completion for instructor evaluation. Lectures and class demonstrations can be linked to other CGD classes or stand alone. All student work is assembled into a student portfolio with a log of all work, tasks, projects, techniques, and files on disk with selected hard copy printouts.

Grading: Development of graphic drawing style and manipulative ability of selected software applications 80%. Student research papers on digital graphic topics 10%. Classroom self management 10%. Extra work and/or special projects are accepted as part of a student's grade.

Tests: Tests are administered at the conclusion of each study area. Tests are performance, involving drawing on the computer. (This is the application of technical technique to a selected project, or it may remain a technique exercise's.)

Attendance: Students are expected to attend the assigned class times and arranged lab times. Failing to attend will result in incomplete projects and drawing practice times.

Requirements for completion of class: Completion of assigned projects. Assembled portfolio of all class work. Participating in the drawing and written tests.

Students requiring special services or arrangements because of hearing, visual, or other disability should contact their instructor, counselor or the Disabled Student Services Office. Occupational/Vocational students-Limited English language skills will not be a barrier to admittance to and participation in Vocational Education Programs.

Students are expected to exercise academic honesty and integrity. Violations such as cheating and plagiarism will result in disciplinary action which may include recommendation for dismissal.
