Beginning course with emphasis on understanding and speaking Spanish; introduction to reading and writing Spanish. This course will also introduce students to Hispanic culture and institutions.

SPAN 1B Elementary Spanish

Continuation of Spanish 1A. Further development of the four skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing Spanish. This course will continue to emphasize the study of Hispanic culture and institutions.

SPAN 2A Intermediate Spanish

Units: 5     Hours: 5 Lecture, 2.5 Laboratory

Review of basic structures through conversation and selected works of literature. Further expansion of patterns, vocabulary and idioms. Creative expression through discussion and composition.

SPAN 2B Intermediate Spanish

Review of basic structures and grammar with greater emphasis on vocabulary and idioms. Introduction to literature as it reflects the characteristics of Hispanic societies. Greater emphasis on composition as a medium of expression.

SPAN 8A Conversational Spanish

Units: 3     Hours: 3 Lecture

This course is a beginning Spanish course, focusing on the Spanish sound system, basic grammar and vocabulary, and cultural elements. Although emphasis is on listening and speaking, basic reading and writing skills will be developed.

SPAN 8B Conversational Spanish

Advisory: Spanish 8A or equivalent.

This course requires knowledge of Spanish pronunciation, basic vocabulary, and present tense grammar. More advanced grammar and vocabulary, and cultural elements will be taught in the development of listening, speaking, basic reading and writing skills.

SPAN 8C Conversational Spanish

Advisory: Spanish 8B or equivalent.

This course requires considerable knowledge of Spanish pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and syntax. More advanced grammar and vocabulary will be taught in the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

SPAN 8D Conversational Spanish

This course requires fluency in spoken and written Spanish. Advanced grammar and vocabulary will be presented while the course concentrates on polishing the student's oral and written skills and develops a sense of style.

SPAN 9A Spanish for Native Speakers

This course is designed for students who speak Spanish at the high or advanced levels but who have not taken a Spanish course. This course introduces the students to the orthographic and grammatical characteristics of Spanish. The roots of the Spanish language are explored through literature including a general survey of Hispanic traditions, culture, and institutions. This course will also introduce student to basic composition writing, strategies for translating from English to Spanish and Spanish to English. Contemporary issues of importance to Hispanics in the United States will also be discussed.

SPAN 12A Spanish for Spanish Speakers

Units: 5     Hours: 5 Lecture, 2.5 Laboratory

Advisory: Basic Spanish reading and writing skills.

Through comparative analysis of selected literary works, the course develops an awareness of cultural and literary contributions from Mexico and other Spanish speaking societies. The course is taught in Spanish with emphasis on composition as a medium of expression.
